Draft for legal review

This document is an implementation draft written to match how the product actually behaves. It has not been reviewed by a qualified lawyer and must not be relied on as legal advice. Items marked [PLACEHOLDER] or LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED are unresolved.

1. Cancel as easily as you subscribed (no dark patterns)

Cancellation is one control in the same surface where you subscribed (app Settings → Subscription → Cancel; web account → Billing → Cancel). No phone call, chat retention script, multi-step maze, hidden link, confirmshaming ('Are you sure you want to be unsafe?'), fake countdown, or forced downgrade interview is used. The control is labelled 'Cancel subscription' (not 'Pause' or 'Manage'), reachable within two taps/clicks, and operable by keyboard and screen reader.

Prohibited by our dark-pattern rulebook (compliance/dark-pattern-rulebook.md): hidden cancellation, forced continuity, visual manipulation, unsubscribe obstruction, misleading defaults. Automated + manual review checklist runs before any billing UI ships.

2. What happens when you cancel

Effective at the end of the paid period you already paid for. You keep full access until 23:59 UTC on the end date. Confirmation (in-app + email) states the end date, that no further charge will occur, and how to export/delete data before expiry. No cancellation fee. Pro-rata rules: [PLACEHOLDER — define, default no mid-period refund except per Refund Policy.]

Evidence: cancellation event (terms version, timestamp, source, end date) in legal_acceptance_events + audit_events. Marketing consent is unaffected unless you separately opt out.

3. Trials, conversion, renewal, pause, downgrade, upgrade

Trial: length disclosed pre-start; reminder before first charge; conversion requires the pre-disclosed price/interval acceptance. Renewal: interval/amount/behaviour disclosed pre-pay; reminder where required. Pause: [PLACEHOLDER — e.g. 1-3 months, access frozen, no charge, resume date]. Downgrade: to Free at period end (vault encrypted retained, VPN/firewall paused, team seats released). Upgrade: immediate with pro-rata charge disclosed. Failed payment: retry + grace (see Billing Terms) before any suspension; never silently terminate a paid safety feature (SOS) without notice.

4. Enterprise and statutory overlays

Enterprise: termination-for-convenience/cause per MSA (once offered). Statutory: EU/UK withdrawal rights, California auto-renewal disclosures, Australian ACL guarantees — cancellation never removes a statutory refund/withdrawal right. [LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED per market before paid launch.]

5. Version

Version 0.9.0-draft, last updated 2026-10-02, next review 2026-12-01, LEGAL REVIEW REQUIRED.
